How to unclog a kitchen sink
A clogged kitchen sink is a common plumbing problem that can be quite annoying. Through daily use, debris slowly accumulates in the sink’s drain pipes, eventually leading to a clogged drain. Fortunately, unclogging a clogged kitchen sink is not a difficult project. The following steps show you how to unclog a clogged kitchen sink, starting with the easiest method and moving on to a more involved process for difficult clogs. You can stop once the clog is cleared.
Try a plug
To clear a clogged kitchen sink, firstly we use a plunger. Although using a plunger seems self-explanatory, it is possible to use it incorrectly. The most important thing is to use the bowl of the plunger to create a tight seal against the bottom of the sink while pumping the tool up and down. For double sinks, it helps to seal one drain opening while you plunge the other.
Most clogs in the kitchen sink can be cleared with a plunger. If not, proceed to the next step.
Clean the siphon
If you have a stubborn clog in the kitchen sink that can’t be cleared with a plunger, cleaning the trap can help.
The shape of the trap serves an important purpose, but it can easily become clogged with debris. When you remove the trap, you have direct access to the clog and can easily clear it. This is usually very easy to do by using sewer lock pliers to loosen the slip nuts that hold the curved trap end to the drain spigot and trap arm. Note that the sliding nuts that connect the piping cannot always be loosened due to age. There may be standing water in the trap, so place a bucket under the trap when you remove it.
If the clog is not in the trap elbow itself, you can visually inspect the surrounding pipe – the trap arm and the beginning of the drain. If you can see the clog, it’s easy to clear it. Clean the inside of the siphon elbow with a small brush while you have it disassembled. If you still can’t see the clog, then the clog is probably somewhere in the drain arm, and you need to proceed to the next method.
Use a drain snake
If a clog in the kitchen sink can’t be cleared with a plunger or by removing the trap, the next method is to use a snake to clear the drain. There are several manual and electrically operated drain snakes available.
